Built around the Open Theremin project by Gaudi, this project was initially intended to be a practice aid for my new Arduino-based theremin. To that end, I attached some Adafruit Neopixels and programmed them to fade between red, orange, and green, in order to indicate the accuracy of intonation. This worked for practising scales and hand positions, however it wasn’t particularly interesting to look at. Therefore I implemented another mode which mapped pitch to colour and volume to brightness of the LEDs. I constructed this installation to demonstrate Modulinos for the Arduino booth at the Maker Faire in Rome 2015. The installation contained various modulinos with which users could interact, including a joystick-controlled servo arm, RGB leds controlled by colour sensors, a button-activated wheel of fortune, and a gas sensor with noise indication.

The graduation project for my Bachelor’s degree in Music, Multimedia and Electronics invited us to come up with any project encompassing these three areas. As a result, my group and I designed a device which could allow the user to turn any hard surface into an interface for musical expression. In a few months we went from idea to prototype, using six piezos to surround an area and using sound source localisation to detect which area the user touches, and to translate this information to control either a synthesizer or a sampler. We added visualisations mapping pitch to colour, amplitude to size, register to brightness and presented it the Electronic Visualisation of the Arts 2014 conference as well as our own student conference - iscMME.

My first embedded system ♥ This is a MIDI controller made out of an Arduino Uno, and a custom shield connecting it to a keypad, gyroscope, flex sensor, light dependent resistor, and a few pots and buttons. These components controlled notes, register, pitch bend, oscillation, flange, delay, and distort, respectively. It was this project which first sparked my love for the satisfaction of using a combination of hardware and software to make something tangible.

Another assignment from my BSc, this project used the Logic Pro Environment to generate and combine a mix of randomised streams and samples. I have always liked gamelan and thought it would lend itself well to this application due to the cohesive harmonies of the pentatonic scale.
